With so many exotic travel destinations to visit all over the world, we can often forget about the adventures awaiting us right on our doorstep. Recently, however, there's been a growing trend among American A-listers ditching tropical locations in favor of destinations a little closer to home. With locations like Austin, Orlando and Honolulu, it seems 2017 might be the year of celebrity staycations.
The Hamptons, New York
It should come as no surprise that The Hamptons makes the list of favored destinations for celebrity staycations; it's long had a reputation as the go-to retreat for wealthy New Yorkers. Thanks to its picturesque beaches and multitude of upscale restaurants and bars, this Long Island area has gained popularity with stars as diverse as Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift and the Kardashian sisters, who have shot multiple episodes of their reality T.V. show in the area.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is the party destination of choice for any visitor to the United States, and it seems the stars already in the country are keen not to miss out either. Among the casinos and high-rise hotels, you could spot celebrities such as Chris Rock, Cher and Shaquille O'Neill - not to mention stars such as Britney Spears who are holding long-term residencies on the strip. With such a diverse range of entertainment and some of the most elaborate hotels in the country, it's unsurprising that such a broad range of celebrities holiday here each year.
Great Smoky Mountain, Tennessee
For anyone who wants to escape to the middle of nowhere, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park offers the perfect retreat. Log cabins can be hired out rather than hotel rooms, offering a real sense of peace and tranquility within a gorgeous natural setting. With such strong country roots, it only makes sense that singer Dolly Parton has made this her staycation destination of choice.
New York City, New York
Of course, you can't talk about celebrity staycations without considering the city that never sleeps. The rich and famous from Tinseltown often make their way over to New York City to enjoy a city break, where there's no end of restaurants to eat at, shows to see and shopping to be done. The Beckhams are well known for their love of the city, while everyone from Leonardo Di Caprio to Sigourney Weaver to Jay Z have been spotted staying in some of the city's many high-end hotels.
Over recent years, Austin has become not just a celebrity staycation destination but home to many of the country's most famous people. Perhaps this is because of the thriving music scene and the buzzing nightlife, or perhaps it simply offers a welcome escape from the star-studded streets of Los Angeles or the hectic lifestyle of New York City. The likes of Julia Roberts, Luke Wilson and Patricia Arquette have been spotted frequenting the area's many top-rated restaurants.
Mount McKinley, Alaska
When the world-famous want to get off the grid for a while, where better to escape to than the remote wilderness of Alaska? There's so much stunning nature to be explored in this northern state - but it's only frequented by those with a true sense of adventure. The continually quirky Shia LaBeouf hitchhiked there as a piece of performance art. President Obama even paid the state a visit during a television show with English explorer Bear Grylls, which was designed to highlight the natural beauty of the area.
City of Napa, California
Anyone interested in wine - that is making or simply drinking! - should pay a visit to the beautiful Napa Valley region of California. Many celebrities have been spotted soaking up the sun in the area, including Robert Redford, Bob Dylan and Olivia Newton John to name but a few. Many celebrities like the area so much that they've even bought their own vineyards there. Director Francis Ford Coppola owns a vineyard in the northwest, while the Beckhams have a private winery that was purchased by David as a birthday gift for Victoria.
Miami Beach, Florida
Between the beach and the famous nightlife, Miami Beach is the perfect celebrity staycation destination for A-listers who want to let off some steam. Everyone from Cameron Diaz to Kate Moss have been seen sunbathing in the area, and there are restaurants that boast famous patrons such as Bill Clinton and Gloria Estefan. It's also the home of many high-end spas in which the country's rich and famous like to go to unwind. Stars such as Lady Gaga and LeBron James have been known to enjoy these luxury resorts.
Officially a staycation but with the feel of a true getaway, Honolulu is the gateway to the many beautiful spots in the island state of Hawaii. The perfect place for nature lovers, Hawaii offers the kind of relaxed vibes and rich greenery that visitors from big cities seek out on their vacations. Many celebrities love the state so much that they've bought holiday homes there; Emma Stone owns a villa on Oahu, while Oprah has purchased a farmhouse on Maui and even Beyonce and Jay-Z own a second home in Hawaii. Actress Nicole Kidman was actually born on the island, and has a Hawaiian name: Hokulani.
The dream destination for the young and the young-at-heart, Orlando is home to many of the country's most famous theme parks. Between Universal Studios and its integrated Harry Potter World, Walt Disney World and Disney's Animal Kingdom to name but a few, this staycation city is a firm favorite among celebrities with children, such as Tina Fey and Drew Barrymore. And of course the Disney starlets and the rest of their peers also make regular appearances, with the likes of Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande spotted in the parks.
